Tour of Acropolis and Parthenon
Tuesday November 4th was my only full day in Athens I booked a tour of the Acropolis. The tour started at 9:00 a.m., a 10-minute walk from my apartment. I stopped for coffee and a bread cheese thing along the way. Weather is perfect, a bit humid in the 70s.
The history that originated here is amazing, the symbol for medicine with the twirly snake Hippocratic oath, theater tragedy comedy, democracy, philosophy. Athens is named for Athena Greek god, and this was their religion back 2500 years ago. Better to have a guide and really learn than just to walk around admiring the ruins.
Most of the destruction is not due to time but due to the invasion first by the Persians who destroyed it, and then the Italians that blew it up. The guide mentioned if you want to see a better representation of what it looked like, visit the replica in Nashville Tennessee.
Museums can be boring, but this museum was worth a visit. It’s built in the same direction and size as the Parthenon. The top floor of the museum is as if you were on scaffolding at the top of the Parthenon and they preserved the actual carvings and sections in this museum.
My observation, including walking past a high school on the way to the tour, is that the teens and general population are good-looking people with fewer overweight than in USA. Many of the teen girls look like supermodels.
When I returned from the tour, I relaxed and checked work email and saw there was a problem, so I assisted a bit. Then I walked to have a burrito for dinner.
